My smart 14-year-old high school girls

The eight girls I have been teaching math in high school are very smart. The twin sisters Ariella and Briella certainly are. For example, one time they challenged me to choose a square number between 100 and 10000. They would then immediately say the root of that number. I took the number 9604 and indeed Ariella immediately said 9 and Briella then 8. The answer is indeed 98.
This is how they do it:

Ariella knows all squares from 1 to 9 by heart: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81
Briella knows the last digits of the squares from 0 to 5 by heart : 0, 1, 4, 9, 6, 5

As soon as the girls hear the number they do the following:
See below how this is done with other numbers. Choose a square number between 100 and 10000: <144>

Ariella
Ariella:
I know the squares
1² = 1, 2² = 4, 3² = 9, 4² = 16, 5² = 25,
6² = 36, 7² = 49, 8² = 64, 9² = 81

The number is 144
With the last two digits removed: 1
The smallest square number that is not larger than 1 is 1²

I say "1"

I calculate 1 × 2 = 2; this number is greater than 1, so no thumps up!

Briella
Briella:
I know the last digit of the squares
0² → 0, 1² → 1, 2² → 4, 3² → 9, 4² → 6; 5² → 5

The number is 144
The last digit is 4
That's the last digit of 2²
Ariella did not raise her thumb

I say "2"

Together the girls say 12. Indeed 12 × 12 = 144.
